Künstler, Fortitude Valley

This skilfully-edited Brisbane outlet may be the cutest little bookshop in the world...

What Queensland bookstore Künstler lacks in shop-floor area it more than makes up for in its great volumes, and if you’re hoping that’s the worst book-related pun you’ll read today, I’m not making any promises. This cute ickle cabin can be found at the end of equally cute Winn Lane in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, which is a perfect address for such a whimsical wee shop, looking like a woodland hideaway that’s been modified for retail with some bigger windows.

Architects Jonathan Kopinski of the Fehlberg Park collective and Jaydn Bowe had their work cut out making the 8m2 floor space work for them, but work it does. Künstler is an independent magazine and book shop, and the interior benefits from not having to stack any number of beach-lit bestsellers from floor to ceiling like the chain stores do. In fact one wall is pretty much book-free, being reserved instead for the counter and an exhibition space for local photographers, screenprinters and weavers. Every centimetre counts though, and the Künstler crew have carefully cherry-picked a choice selection of indy titles from Australia and beyond, with a focus on European aesthetic that belies its name.
