Fonda Flinders

Melbourne Mexican welcomes a further eye-popping addition to the familia...

Bearing no relation to Henry, Jane or even Peter, the ever-expanding Fonda family we’re meeting today is a restaurant group in Melbourne. I say group – Fonda Flinders is the third outlet following hot on the heels of their second-son in Windsor – but at this rate, there will be one in every neighbourhood before you can say “quesadilla”. Techne Architects delivered the Windsor addition and, like a trusted family physician, the firm has been invited back for more concept midwifery at Flinders Lane.

A “fonda”, as every Mexican worth their salt and lime knows, is a home kitchen selling food to the public, and the vibe at Fonda Flinders is friendly and relaxed. Bespoke furniture has a hint of picnic tables and park benches about it, and brightly coloured tiles create a fun atmosphere too. The overhead power lines of urban Mexico are recalled in the lighting arrangement here, and custom pendants by Inkster Maken join fittings recycled from the previous occupant. Honourable mention must also go to Luke Henley of Wild Hen Design for the strong graphics and branding.
