Madam Geneva

Retro Manhattan cocktail bar is an exotic blend of beauty and mystery...

We recently had a nosey around Saxon + Parole, an equestrian-inspired restaurant in New York. What we didn’t mention at the time was the secret door within Saxon + Parole which leads to Madam Geneva, a sister establishment from AvroKO Hospitality Group. And a saucy little madam it is too.

Madam Geneva is named after an antiquated term for gin, and gin cocktails are the speciality of this exotic looking spot. The venue is on the corner of Bowery and Bleecker Street, but the Madam G of the branding perhaps has her roots somewhere south of this address in Chinatown. Her establishment succeeds with equal parts glamour, gaudiness and grit, expertly mixed as you’d expect from AHG. Antique brooches ornament lace wallpaper, while at the other end of the spectrum red neon lights prancing crystal horses. Salvaged metal screens hark back to the days when elevators had attendants, and Madam Geneva does a great job of eliciting a sense of nostalgia for “The Good Old Days” when you could really enjoy yourself, helped by its location in one of New York’s former hotbeds of bohemia.
