Vokos’ Dirty Land

Disney icons get a working over from vice...

It’s not good times for Mickey Mouse at the moment – Disney’s most iconic creation is currently undergoing a bit of a character assassination in the art world. The formerly wholesome mouse (or his hand at least) makes a distorted appearance in pop arter Nathan James’ current Creepshow collection, while all of Mickey – and we do mean all – is the target of Gustavo Bokos and his work Dirty Land.

Mickey and some of Walt’s other creations have come in for a working over at the hands of the Brazilian, aka Vokos, and the result is an upgrade from the U rating of Fantasia to something closer to X-Rated. Leave your kids at home if you want to see more of Dirty Land, which is Vokos’ mixed media exploration of an adult themed cartoon collision inspired by the secret messages purportedly hidden within family favourites from the animation studio. The Empty Frame online gallery is organising the exhibition, which can be viewed in a bricks and mortar capacity at Cafeteateret in Oslo until 20th March.
