As the season dictates, naturally we’ve got plentiful fairs, markets and festive pop-ups to take your Yuletide fancy – but, as ever, we’re squeezing in a little bit of art and design to keep things ticking over…

Designers Makers Christmas Markets; Festival Village

As part of Southbank Centre’s Winter Festival, Designers Makers have chosen over fifty designers and makers who will be gathering at Festival Village this weekend to show and sell their craft – which includes ceramics, jewellery, textiles, homewares and print. Workshops set up by the likes of Zombie Collective, Garudio Studio, and Wrap Magazine will also take place to keep both the adults and children entertained and informed. And, in keeping with the true spirit of these festive times, Southbank Centre will be providing Christmas music and winter warming food and drink.

Christmas Salon – Eleven‘s annual exhibition – this year celebrates its fifth anniversary. With something for everyone, Christmas Salon offers affordable works with limited edition prints starting at £100 from upcoming and established artists. Featuring paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures, from the gallery’s own artists, the display originates from the famous Salon de Paris where the best artists were presented in this high profile exhibition. Visually appealing, this is an ideal opportunity to acquire some new art ready for 2013.

As fans of designer Lu Flux‘s quirky designs, it’s great to hear that throughout December she’s opened her very own pop-up shop at Spitalfields, and what’s more: it will remain open until Christmas Eve. Known for her colourful patchwork designs, the pop-up – which is as stunning as her works – is stocking new addition home collection pieces and accessories as well as her wonderful AW12 ready to wear collection. If you need some last minute Christmas inspiration, this is the place to find it, and did I mention? Lu will be on hand each day imparting her tips to those who want to hear more…

Midwinter Ball at Kensington Palace

Dust off your mask, dress to impress, and expect the unexpected – as the Midwinter Ball unfolds at Kensington Palace this evening. The soiree – set within the majestic 18th century Orangery – is one such soiree you won’t want to miss. Escape artists, fire hula-hooping and magic within the icy winter wonderland will keep you on your toes, whilst decadent dancing and live music will ensure that this Midwinter Masquerade is not one that will be quickly forgotten. Revellers can also take a tour of the Palace by night; take in 300 years of mysterious sights, unexplained happenings and strange stories as you’re guided round the darkened rooms and echoing corridors.

If you’ve already had your fill of mediocre Christmas fare or Bavarian Sausage, get yourselves over to the magical wonderland usually known as 18 Hewett Street, and prepare to be dazzled by edible Christmas cards – yes, we said edible Christmas cards – courtesy of Animal Vegetable Mineral, whisky salt caramel popcorn and choco smoked walnuts from Lily Vanilli, and Christmas pud from St John. Of course, there’ll be booze; craft beers and fine wines are yours to enjoy and if all this festive cheer leaves you feeling charitable, try their donation based gift wrapping service, with paper designs by Reed+Rader, Joe Kessler and Alice Waese, and profits going to Foodcycle.

Winter Sparks; FACT Liverpool

Quite literally electrifying… Winter Sparks – FACT Liverpool’s latest exhibition – is an interactive light and sound show with electric sparks. Explore the puzzling British invented Wilberforce pendulum, and experience dramatic charges from Tesla coils whilst pondering over the works of four new media artists making their UK debuts. Large-scale installations will take over the space to explore the connections between art and science, some of the artists will take part in special performances and there will also be a whole host of events around Winter Sparks; including film screenings and workshops.

What do you get when you have a collaboration between Soho House, Bombay Sapphire, organiser Polly Betton and food designer Andrew Stellitano? An Edible Cinema Christmas Special, that’s what! Screening the orgasmic When Harry met Sally at Notting Hill’s newly refurbished Electric Cinema, the event (showing at 2.45pm and 5.45pm), provides a unique food and drink cinematic experience whereby you’ll be spoilt with a Bombay Big Apple cocktail on arrival, and a series of numbered packages containing specially created tasters to eat during specific points during the film. An interactive experience for your tastebuds and senses.
