Seven Necessities, Atelier Ted Noten

What a girl wants, what a girl needs?

That the female of the species is more deadly than the male is definitely a philosophy that Dutch designer/sculptor Ted Noten subscribes to; in his collection 7 Necessities – which debuts this week, as part of DesignMiami/ at Ornamentum Gallery – he has put together his idea of an essential survival kit for women, which contains more than one way to inflict some damage on the opposition.

Noten isn’t afraid of offending certain sections of the female populace (brave, I’ve been on the receiving end of their wrath once or twice myself), and you’d have to ask a feminist what 7 Necessities is implying about women, but from the outside looking in; there is a certain empowerment in his creations – the centrepiece being the Trophy Helmet designed to bring down the wearer’s prey in efficient style. Other seemingly superficial objects reveal a deadly secret on closer inspection.

Beautifully detailed and crafted using cutting edge software and a 3D printer that creates a physical copy from a pure white nylon compound material, occasional glimpses of luxury appear on the stark objects in the form of gold or jewellery. A killer collection.
