Muller Van Severen

on a diet of style and design...

There are certainly no frills to this collection of furniture by Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen – it’s all about making it minimal, and then trimming a bit more off for good measure.

Muller Van Severen‘s collection of shelving, storage, racks and tables use multi-coloured marble and polyethylene segments, delicately attached to the thinnest of brass skeletons; showcased in art installation style at Interieur Kortrijk 2012, the duo cite Judd and Bauhaus as inspirations, but also display the influence of the De Stijl-ist artworks of Mondrian in 3D. The lighting is similarly sparing, reduced to bulb, cord and shade, yet the collection manages to fashion a lot of visual appeal out of very little.

The only problem we can see with this collection is its practicality – we’re not sure if those shelves would hold the heft of our editor-in-chief’s back issues of NME, and pretty certain the chairs wouldn’t hold his weight. The battle of form versus function continues…
