Jaime Hayon for BD’s 40th Birthday

Vase collection a lavish birthday treat...

Happy birthday BD Barcelona Design! The Spanish company is celebrating its 40th like I imagine I will, buying myself a present. BD have gone a bit more upmarket than a DVD box-set and a takeaway pizza though, commissioning Spanish design supremo Jaime Hayon to produce 40 hand-painted vases.

The collection, called Showtime, is a series of individually numbered figures. The sketches you see suggest animal inspiration, and there are certainly traces of that in the finished articles, although the ears have been reshaped to straight handles used to remove the vase lids.

It’s an attractive collection which doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the Madrid-born art-designer certainly seems like a relaxed character. I wouldn’t fancy painting a limited edition vase with a child dandling from my knee, or standing up with my foot on a chair. Does he seem a bit like a Spanish Rolf Harris, or is it just me?
