The World is Not Small — 1826

images point to a fresh perspective on location...

Yuki Onodera is clearly not a fan of a good cliché, as the old favourite “it’s a small world” gets a thorough deconstruction in the photographer’s latest collection of work on display at Shanghai’s Vanguard Gallery.

A well-travelled artist, Onodera has used geography as a setting, theme and inspiration in past collections, such as Roma (self-explanatory, although far from conventional) and Below Orpheus (almost impossible to explain, so we won’t), but in this body of work she has decided to bring the world to her. Creating dozens of signs using place names from all over the place, Onodera arranged them in abstract in windowed rooms to photograph, examining through imagination our relationships with distance, light, and even the visual impact of words themselves.

The exhibition features 10 images from the collection, and is on display until 3rd November. Make sure you bring your GPS to get home.
